Why the World Needed Motown
Many foreign countries looked at President Obama's election win as a great event. It was an event thought brought joy and hope, all because we elected an African-American. There have been other African-Americans who tried to run for president, but were never successful. People saw Obama's win as a long overdue election ever since the civil rights movement. However, this would not have happened if it were not for one man named Smokey Robinson.
What does an old R&B singer have to do with Obama winning the election? It's quite simple when you look back at it. Smokey Robinson was good friends with Berry Gordy, a up and coming songwriter. Robinson urged Gordy to create his own record company, so he did. That company turned into the world famous Motown Records. Still not making the connection? Motown Records influenced a lot of things, including today's music. However, it also influenced America on a larger scale. Motown artists sang about real life problems, including African-American struggles. This was a catalyst for many civil rights workers. Motown kept the beat for their marches and rallies, helping shape America into what it is today.
Without Motown, the civil rights movement would not have been as strong. This means that we would not have succeeded in desegregating America, and people of all skins colors would not be in the same schools or even viewed as in the same social classes. This means that Obama would not be president today, and the thought of having a black president would be laughed at. If Obama wasn't president, than other nations would not have been given the hope and joy they received when he won. The world needed Motown, it just took us a while to figure it out.
