Dear Reader,
For my multi-genre research paper, I chose to research the world-famous Motown Records. Ever since I was a little kid, even back to my days in New Jersey, I can remember listening to The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, and other Motown greats. I have continued listening to these music icons. However, I realized that I do not know anything about these people I have known since my childhood. I was curious to know the big deal about Motown Records, besides its classic music. What made it so big? How did it effect the world? I can remember my dad telling me of all the things Motown did for America, so I chose Motown Records as my research topic.
I have always been familiar with Motown, but other than a paper on The Temptations I knew nothing about specific details. My dad always gave me random facts about Motown because he knew I liked Motown music. I knew many of Motown's great artists and songs. However, it is hard to right a paper simply on these facts. So I had to start researching somewhere.
Because Motown is such a broad topic for a paper, I had to narrow down my research and pick what I really wanted to know about Motown. I could remember riding home in the car with my dad and a Tempation's song came on the radio. I started singing along with it, and thought I'd show my dad how much I knew about The Temptations. While I was listing off random facts my dad told me that I should do a research paper on the effect Motown had on America. That was my inspiration for my research. I decided to start from the basics and answer the question, who were some of the pioneers who helped Motown in its beginning's? I also need to know how they made it so successful. Most importantly I need to know how they influenced America on a large scale.
Now that I had my questions, I needed to find some answers. I looked all over the web for articles on Motown, biographies of Motown artists, time lines, and encyclopedias. I soon discovered that there is an infinite amount of information about Motown Records out there. I was able to find at least one source of all the types I listed earlier. While I didn't use all of the websites I found, I had a never ending supply of information.
I was able to answer every question that I asked. I learned out several people who helped make Berry Gordy's creation into a masterpiece. I never knew how much Smokey Robinson had to do with the creation of Motown. An interesting piece of information that I found out, was that Stevie Wonder was only twelve years old when he teamed up with Motown. Probably the most important information that I discovered was how Motown really changed America, but you can read that in my paper.
Before I wrote this paper, I loved Motown's singers and music, but that's all Motown was to me, music. It is so much more to me than that. Motown was a fine piece of handiwork, that took lots of effort to create. It was what people wanted to hear, but more importantly, what they needed to hear. Biggest of all, it was the beat that helped drive America during one of its biggest transitions. I want people to understand that Motown is more than just music, and that music can be more than just something you like to listen to. It can effect so much more than just your mood.
I had the difficult task of choosing three more genre choices. There are so many possibilities, so I knew I had to pick the right ones. The first one I did was a time line. Motown has many important dates in its history, so I started at Berry Gordy's birth, to the day he sold the company. This genre choice has several interesting facts about Motown and people who worked for it. For my second genre, I wanted to reiterate the idea of how wide Motown's effect really was. I decide to write a magazine article on how Motown changed the world. I tied back some facts from my article, and different thoughts I had, and soon I had an article. I managed to connect the dots and take a totally new grasp on Motown's effect, that I thought was very interesting. My third genre was a Wordle, which is simply a word collage. I made it out of my magazine article I wrote, so that the reader could know what the main ideas for the article were, and could tie it back to the rest of my project.
Well, after half a semester of hard work on this project, I'm finally done. I hope you take the time to look through everything with care and attention to detail. It is full of interesting dates and facts, songs written by Motown's greats, and philosophies you've probably never even thought of. I hope you enjoy my work.
Sincerely,
Michael Shifflet
